Williamsburg
Tim’s take
His core position is a decline narrative: Williamsburg went from a place with "a little streak of independence" to Zara, Lululemon, and yoga studios in the space of six or seven years, and he dates the cool version to around 2005-2007 19:20 20:06. He extends that same story later, saying it used to have hipster orgies and bad smells and was cool for it, and now it's corporate money from France, no different from Soho 18:35; elsewhere he just calls it "the real New York" that has since become Manhattan 17:37.
Outside that arc it mostly functions as a punchline for money and class — a shorthand for expensive rentals 10:27, marauding packs of guys in their twenties 3:40, overly precious comedy-club sensitivity 4:56, and the kind of buyer who wants a rustic ring to wear at a bar there 27:02. He also uses it geographically as a stand-in for Hasidic Williamsburg specifically, riffing on the fur hats rather than gentrification at all 0:00 30:49.
