Every time he actually goes to Montauk it goes badly — the town is cold and miserable, the Airbnb is a working-class dump dressed up as a luxury surf cottage, and he complains about it at length rather than enjoying himself 0:00 38:58 7:00. At the same time he uses it as shorthand for a certain kind of money, saying watching rich kids hop out of a Rolls with ice cream turned him into a "Stalinist," and later lists renting a Montauk weekend house alongside $125 ribeyes as a marker of the soon-to-be-hunted upwardly mobile 13:39 28:34.
He's also genuinely interested in Camp Hero and the Montauk Project lore, walking the base and talking to locals, and he treats the area's remoteness as the actual reason anything shady could plausibly have happened there 8:50 20:20.
