Vietnam

Every mention, in time. Each mark is a day — taller means more that day — and links to the moment.

Tim’s take

Vietnam mostly shows up as backstory for other people rather than a subject on its own — it's where Dennis, his mother's tenant, served before ending up broke and living in a van with a wine-soaked catchphrase for every disaster, a story he tells almost the same way twice 57:15 24:27. He also uses it as the origin of the government experiment plot in Jacob's Ladder, again treating it as texture rather than something to argue about 29:40.

When he does take a position, it's political: Vietnam is his standing example of a war that was never about the country's people, was terrible on its own terms, and mainly generated profit for people like LBJ while it dragged on 1:09:15 47:44 1:06:13. He reaches for it as the precedent whenever he's arguing that Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine are repeating the same pattern of unwinnable wars that exist to be lucrative rather than to be won 47:44 1:32.
