Soviet Union

Every mention, in time. Each mark is a day — taller means more that day — and links to the moment.

Tim’s take

He mostly uses the Soviet Union as a historical reference point rather than a subject of its own — the Cold War enemy the U.S. national security state was built to fight 53:24, and the model for how funding a proxy force (Al-Qaeda against the Soviets) can backfire, a comparison he draws again when explaining Hamas 2:58. In a lighter aside with Lex Fridman he singles out the Soviet national anthem as objectively better than the American one, calling it "the baddest" and saying he plays it in the car 23:40. Beyond that he lets guests do the actual reflecting on Soviet propaganda and its collapse without staking out a position himself 25:48 1:12:15.
