metaverse

Every mention, in time. Each mark is a day — taller means more that day — and links to the moment.

Tim’s take

His baseline position is that the metaverse is a joke that never became a thing, from Zuckerberg's 'pathetic' demo footage to the idea of virtual comedy clubs, which he treats as absurd shorthand for the whole project rather than a real threat 47:45 56:47 38:46. By the time Meta's spending comes out in the New York Times, he treats it as vindication, recalling people telling him he had to be 'the first comedian in the metaverse' during the NFT craze and mocking that whole era as obviously doomed 9:24 50:02.

Underneath the mockery he keeps returning to one darker riff: that the metaverse is really about people opting out of reality, whether that's 'metaverse children' solving overpopulation, a surveilled digital afterlife with its own hell, or a broader complaint about adults retreating into fantasy worlds 1:01:07 1:05:25 40:19. He occasionally breaks from the bit to say the tech is inevitable and even ties it, uneasily, to digitizing real-world conflict and parasocial obsession, but he never treats any of that as good news 33:17 38:46.
