Fifth Avenue

Every mention, in time. Each mark is a day — taller means more that day — and links to the moment.

Tim’s take

He treats Fifth Avenue as the reference point for old money — insulated, concealed wealth built to keep the poor from noticing rather than to flaunt it 24:30. He describes the people who live there as insulated from normal life, scurrying from black cars into buildings without ever touching the subway or the street 37:02. He also imagines the old guard residents there, like the elderly woman paying tens of millions for an apartment, annoyed at Pokemon hunters overrunning the neighborhood 25:46.

He uses Fifth Avenue as the default unit for high-end retail, measuring San Francisco's Union Square against it before its collapse 1:35 and noting Louis Vuitton reaching malls as far as Mobile, Alabama 32:39. Elsewhere it is mostly a punchline — the walking-down-Fifth rule, the mock complaint about Brazilians moving into the old clubs, and the comparison of Ray's opulent lifestyle to people living there 3:19 38:16 5:13.
